A performance text that integrates image, poetry, music, movement and narrative, Melancholia exists in the landscape of then and now, of what was and what could be. Melancholia considers what role choice, circumstance and character play in the construction of sadness.

"Flow my Tears" lyrics by John Dowland, 1600, arranged by Robert D. Clark.

Playwright's Note: Melancholia is a collage of original and sourced material. For example, Henry Fuseli's paintings The Nightmare (1781) and Nightmare (The Incubus) (1781-82) and Albrecht Dürer's engraving Melancholia I (1514) were influential in the development of the piece's vocabulary of imagery. Robert Burton's The Anatomy of Melancholy (1621) is quoted extensively and writers as diverse as Jeremy Taylor, Edward Abbey, Anton Chekhov, Jane Austen, Billie Holiday, Jean Racine, Nick Drake, Anne Sexton, U2 (paraphrased), Paul Williams, New Order, John Dowland, Sigmund Freud, Germaine Greer and P.L. Travers feature in a patchwork of references woven through my original writing. --Leah Mercer, May 11, 2004

Communicable Dis-Ease
Created and Directed by Charmian Creagle

Crammed one on top of another in a constant ocean of never ending faces is
it truly surprising that we never actually make contact?

Communicable Dis-Ease is a fun experimental theater piece about the lack of communication between individuals in a modern day city.

"This knock-out assembly of actors is backed by the maverick writing and directorial style of Charmian Creagle who creates a series of stunning stage pictures, while deftly varying rhythm and tempo throughout the production." -Hi! Drama, June 2004

Cast: Kathleen Kwan, Kelly Rauch, Sean Doran, Max Dickstein and Kaaron Briscoe
